Royal Institutionはファラデーが研究していて講演もしていた場所ですので、演者も力が入っています。ファラデーの実験器具ももってきてとても面白そうな講演ですので是非ご覧ください。最後のほうのスライドではファラデーの次の言葉があげられています。
‘I think it likely that I have made many mistakes in the preceding pages, for even to myself my ideas on this point appear only as the shadow of a speculation, or as one of those impressions upon the mind which are allowable for a time as guides to thought and research. He who labours in experimental inquiries, knows how numerous these are, and how often their apparent fitness and beauty vanish before the progress and development of real natural truth.’
簡単な私が作った訳を載せておきます。
「私は、ここに至るまでのページで多くの間違いを犯している可能性が高いだろうと考えています。なぜなら、私自身にとってさえも、この点に関する私の考えは、具体的な証拠や確証に基づかない非常に曖昧な「仮説の影」や、一時的な感じや直感としての「心の印象」としてしか見えないからです。これらは、研究や考察の方向性を示す「思考や研究の指針」として一時的に許容されることもあります。実験や試験を通じて真実や事実を探求する「実験的な研究に従事する」者は、こうした仮説や考えがどれほど多くあらわれるものか、そして初めはうまくいきそうですばらしく美しいと思われた考えや仮説が、真実の発見によって誤りであることが明らかになる「実際の自然の真実の進展と発展の前で消え去る」現象をよく知っています。」
この文章は、Experimental Researches in Chemistry and Physicsにのっている、Mr. Phillipsへの手紙にある言葉です。この文章の前に、重力や光、熱などをエーテルの振動としてとらえる力線の仮説を展開していてその最後をしめくくる言葉です。
